About Hingham Farmers Market

The Hingham Farmers Market is the third oldest farmers’ market in Massachusetts. Since 1977, the market has been offering local products to market-goers. Today, the HFM hosts between 35 to 40 vendors weekly – beginning in early May and continuing to the weekend before Thanksgiving.
In addition to a wide assortment of locally grown produce, meat and poultry, fresh seafood from the region is also prominently represented. The HFM hosts gardeners – offering plants and cut flowers – several bakers, vendors selling local honey, jams and jellies, sauces and many other food products. A select group of artisans rounds out the weekly market scene.
For many years, the HFM’s original location was at the Station Street parking lot. When the Greenbush commuter rail line restoration project started in 2003, the market relocated to the Hingham Bathing Beach on Otis Street (Rte. 3A).
In the fall of 2006, a small group of Hingham citizens who were concerned about the future of the HFM engaged the vendors and together they began a revitalization effort. The market incorporated in 2009.
In 2012, an active group of volunteers known as the Friends of the Hingham Farmers Market began offering services to market patrons and vendors as well as offering outreach programs in the community. Everyone is welcome to join the group of Friends – made up of residents from all over the South Shore – by contacting the HFM directly during the market’s season or emailing Bev Vernon, bbvernon39 [at] verizon.net

Acceptance of Hingham Farmers Market, Inc. “Rules, Policies and Procedures – 2017” (Rules, Policies and Procedures – 2018) is a requirement for participation in the HFM

Food and Plant Vendors (FP):
The Hingham Farmers Market’s focus is primarily on agricultural and horticultural products. Vendors selling fresh uncut fruits and vegetables, unprocessed honey, maple syrup and fresh eggs, as well as those selling plants and/or cut flowers are not required to have a town-issued permit.

Non-Food and Plant Vendors (NFP):
The number of available spaces for products that are neither food nor plant related are limited, both by the HFM policy and agreement with the Town of Hingham. All new NFP applicants must submit representative examples of their products to the HFM for jury review and acceptance. Once approved, vendors will be scheduled for market days according to availability of space.

Community Service and/or Education Space (CS&E):
The HFM will provide one 10’x10’ space each week for local non-profit organizations wishing to participate in the HFM. Acceptance is at the discretion of the HFM administration and is available at no cost.

Processed Food Vendors Please Note:
Processed Food Vendors should ascertain acceptance by the Hingham Farmers Market prior to applying for a Hingham Department of Health permit.
Vendors wishing to sell processed food items must comply with all local, state and federal regulations. All vendors wishing to sell processed foods must purchase a permit ($75) from the Hingham Department of Health; contact them directly at 781-741-1466. In addition, please review the documents below:

  • Hingham Department of Health Farmers’ Market Food Service Application
  • MA Food Protection Program: Policies, Procedures and Guidelines
  • Hingham Department of Health Farmers’ Market Processed Food Procedures
  • Massachusetts Minimum Requirements for Packaged Food
  • Allergen Awareness Training

General
Vendor spaces are 10’x10’ areas within the Market’s footprint and are assigned by the Market Manager for each Market session. Full-season vendor spaces are assigned at the beginning of the season and generally do not change. Partial season and other vendor spaces may change from week to week although the Market Manager recognizes the need for consistency in placement and strives to maintain it.

Cancellations
The Hingham Farmers Market is a “rain or shine” market. In the event of hazardous weather the Market Manager may announce a cancellation via email and Facebook.
